As I sit here trying to think of interesting, funny, clever or just plain puzzling things to write about, I am constantly distracted by a small black and white creature that seems to be endlessly moving! This is of course…..THE PUPPY!!!! Who for various reasons keeps me calling his name in dubious ranges of pitch and fevered anxiety! Just now all is quiet as he has found my bare toes and is presently licking away at them, presumably to soften them up for the bite! So far he has managed to climb beneath all cleverly placed obstacles in order to chew at the wires behind the TV and Stereo….(last time he did this a minor electrical shock was his thanks, but unlike Pavlov’s dog he seems to enjoy the stimulation! )Our thanks was no DVD player for a few days! He has also scratched open my daughter’s bedroom door and found some lovely fluffy bears to make close friends with…too close for my daughter’s liking! He has spent some time yapping at imaginary things to yap about…quite ignorable except for the pitch at which he yaps which is high enough to sound like someone is inflicting unmentionable torture upon him and makes me worried about what the neighbours think, not to mention passers by. He has also found a nice cubby under the surfboard stack where low and behold someone kindly left him a leg rope to chew…yum! Needless to say he is a happy little fellow…bouncing from one mishap to the next…what is it about being naughty that seems to give him an agile spring to his step?….he can be quite springy too, managing to leap tall fences at a single bound and onto tables with tempting treats for him to devour. At the beach he can leap off sand dunes and land on his bum with alacrity, chase small boys with buckets of fish and land in the bucket with the fish in the bat of an eyelid! When taking a (controlled?)stroll down the road he can leap into the direct line of giant dog creatures who think he is a tasty morsel of entrĂ©e and down open manholes that require his yanking back and nearly choking with the pull of his lead. But just like all small things…children included….we love him…especially for all his bad behaviours and despicable habits….like romancing the soft blanket on my bed, hiding his bones under my husband’s pillow and sneaking into the shower with whoever is trying to have one! Yes, it is these wonderful characteristics that endear him to us so…..and it is his spontaneous need for attention, even negative attention that keeps him in the centre of our world and it is his often funny but usually inappropriate behaviours that make for much of the laughter and lightheartedness of the household. Where, after all would we be without small children and of course puppies…..( probably in a peaceful state of bliss in a perfectly neat house where everything works, clothes do not go missing, dinner is on time, routine prevails, the expected is the norm and all is deathly quiet…….mmmm ).
Look at the dear little thing now....he's fallen asleep with his head on my mobile phone…and he is dribbling…oh…..how darling! Now what was I going to cook him for dinner???
